The next note E may He a Root or a Third. Try these:—

The next note F may be a Root only. It cannot be a Third, since the preceding Chord has been used in the Third Position. It cannot be a Fifth since the Root
would be B and the Chord an imperfect one. It must be:—
Since we have used F in the Octave Position and we already know that the final Chord is to be in the Octave
Position, there is only one thing left for the next to the last note D. It must be in the Fifth Position, thus:—
Now write out the exercise complete and play it many times, dwelling upon each Chord. This will repay the most painstaking study and re­peated analyses.
In Class work, wherever possible, it would be well to sing over this exercise and all succeeding ones, in four-part harmony.
